Indications for EBUS-TBNA
The common indication for EBUS-TBNA are:
- In patient with suspected tuberculosis to get samples to confirm the diagnosis of tuberculosis and also drug resistant tuberculosis.
- Sampling mediastinal and hilar lymph nodes in lung cancer for molecular testing e.g. EGFR, ALK, PDLI, ROS mutations.
- For diagnosis of unexplained mediastinal lymphadenopathy accessible to the major airway including benign conditions such as sarcoidosis or tuberculosis. Samples may be sent for cytology, histology, TB Genexpert and for TB culture.
- For diagnosis of lung cancer in case there is no endoluminal tumor at bronchoscopy and the lung mass is adjacent to the major airways.
- Staging the mediastinum for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which is important in determining outcome and treatment.
- As a research tool for tissue banking samples for later studies.
